Trim Retainer Clips

Trim retainers hold soft and light trim to the body: bonnet insulation pads, roof and boot linings, carpet edges and interior boards. Most have a wide, flat head so the trim does not pull through, and either a ribbed stem or a push pin to lock into the hole.

Where retainers are used

  • Bonnet pads and engine bay insulation
  • Roof linings, boot floor boards and side trims
  • Interior panels that sit behind other trim

Picking a retainer

Match the stem to the hole first, then pick a head big enough for the material. If the old retainer has torn the trim, a slightly wider head can help it hold. See how to measure a car clip.

Removing retainers

Slide a forked tool under the head close to the stem and lift straight up. If the retainer has a centre pin, lift the pin first. More in how to remove car trim clips and reuse or replace car clips.
