Bumper, wheel arch liner and splash shield clips

Bumper, wheel arch liner and splash shield clips
Quick answer: Bumpers, wheel arch liners and splash shields are usually held by push-pin rivet clips, scrivets, screws with speed clips or screw grommets, and a few plastic retainers. Remove the screws first, then the clips, and replace any that crack or no longer lock. Matching the hole size is the key to a firm fit.

Bumper covers, wheel arch liners and splash shields take a beating from water, stones and car park kerbs. When their clips go missing, panels sag, flap at speed or rub on the tyre. Most cars use a handful of clip types in this area.

The usual clips

  • Push pin rivet clips along the top of the bumper and the edge of the liner. See rivet clips.
  • Scrivets where the panel is removed for servicing. See scrivet clips.
  • Speed clips and screws where the liner meets the guard or the under-tray. See speed clips.
  • Screw grommets in square holes for screws. See screw grommets.

Replacing them

Count the empty holes first and note what is in the neighbouring ones. Clips in the same area are often the same type. Remove one good clip and measure it; that gives you the size for the missing ones.

When refitting a liner, start at the top centre and work outwards, so the liner sits square. Push pin clips go in with the pin raised; press the pin flush once the body is fully home.

Check the panel holes

If a hole in a plastic liner has torn, a clip with a larger head can help, or the liner may need repair. A clip will not hold well in a split hole.

Buy a few extra

These clips get lost and broken often, so it is worth keeping a pack in the garage. Many of our packs drop in price per pack when you buy two or more, shown on each product page.

After a minor bump

A bumper that has popped out at one corner often just needs new clips. Check the mounting tabs on the bumper and the brackets behind it. If a tab is broken, clips alone will not hold it.

Under-trays and engine covers

Under-trays are often the first thing to lose clips, because they are removed at every oil change. A loose under-tray can scrape on driveways and catch air at speed, so it is worth refitting it with a full set of clips.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use cable ties instead of clips on a bumper?

As a short-term roadside fix, possibly. For a lasting repair, fit the right clips so the bumper sits correctly and does not move.

Which clip should I buy for my bumper?
