Toyota body flare clips: how to pick the right one
Quick answer: Toyota wheel arch flares are held by colour-coded plastic clips that push into the body, with the flare clipping over them. The colour helps identify the clip, but several colours look alike, so check the head and stem sizes as well. Remove the flare gently and replace any clips that break.

Toyota 4WDs and utes hold their wheel arch flares and body mouldings on with plastic clips, and many of these clips are colour-coded. It is common to find two or three different clips on one flare, which is why people order the wrong ones.

Why there are so many

A flare follows a curved arch and meets different parts of the body: the guard, the bumper and the sill. Each spot can need a different stem length or head shape, so one flare can use several clips. Facelifts and different models can also change the clips.

Using colour as a guide

Colour is a useful first filter. Our Toyota body flare clips range includes green, red, yellow, blue, salmon, pink and other colours. But colour alone is not enough: compare the head width, the stem and the length on each product page.

Step by step

  1. Remove the flare carefully. Work along its length, releasing each clip.
  2. Note which clips stayed in the body and which stayed in the flare.
  3. Lay the old clips out in order and note the colour and shape of each.
  4. Measure one of each type.
  5. Match each type to a product and order enough for every position, plus a few spares.

Fitting tips

Fit the clips to the flare or body the same way the old ones sat. Line the flare up from one end and press over each clip. Do not force a clip that will not line up; check you have the right one for that spot.

Other body clips

For sill mouldings and side skirts, see sill and rocker panel clips. For bumpers and liners, see bumper and wheel arch clips.

Why colours are not enough

Toyota uses colour to tell clips apart on the production line. Different clips can have similar colours, and colours fade in the sun. Use the colour to narrow down your choice, then confirm with the head, stem and length.

Removing a flare

  1. Remove any screws at the ends of the flare and inside the wheel arch.
  2. Starting at one end, release the flare from each clip with a plastic tool.
  3. Note which clips stay in the body and which come away with the flare.
  4. Check the clip holes in the body for rust before refitting.

Our Toyota flare clips side by side

Many Toyota flare clips look alike apart from their colour, and colour alone is not a safe guide. The table shows the sizes marked on each product photo. H is the head, L the stem length and D the stem diameter; a head size in brackets is the inner (top) diameter.

Frequently asked questions

Do Toyota flare clips fit other makes?

Some may, if the hole and panel thickness are the same, but they are made for Toyota flares. Match the sizes before using them elsewhere.

How many clips does one flare use?

It varies by model and flare. Count the clips as you remove it and keep a few spare.

Sizes and fitting steps in our guides are general. Check your vehicle's manual for anything specific to your car. Questions? Call 0499 001004.
